Article VII. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper

“Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, the believer’s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to his faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Being a church ordinance, it is prerequisite to the privileges of church membership and to the Lord’s Supper.”

Baptism

Four biblical principles concerning baptism

1. Baptism is by
2. Baptism is for

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. . . . So those who accepted his message were baptized . . . Acts 2:41, CSB

3. Baptism pictures the gospel in 2 ways:

  • Baptism symbolizes the washing away of our sins

I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols. [I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will place my Spirit within you and cause you to follow my statutes and carefully observe my ordinances.] Ezekiel 36:25-27, CSB

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. Hebrews 10:22, CSB

    • Baptism symbolizes our new birth  – Romans 6:1-5
4. Baptism is a public profession of our faith in Jesus
